Obituary for George H Mikesich Jr.

George H Mikesich Jr.
George H. Mikesich, Jr., 82, of Pace, passed away peacefully in his sleep Sunday, November 4, 2018, at Sacred Heart Hospital.

George was born December 18, 1935, in Kansas City, Kansas, as the oldest child of George and Bertha Mikesich. He spent his formative years, through high school, in Bonner Springs, Kansas. After graduating from Kansas City Junior College he attended Washburn University where he joined the Phi Delta Theta fraternity.

He then chose to join the U.S. Navy. While at his first duty station in San Diego, California, he met his bride of 52 years, Sharon. During his Naval career, they enjoyed numerous wonderful duty stations where they made many lifelong friends. He flew several different types of aircraft, as well as serving as a catapult officer and a flight instructor, mostly in formation flying. Many of his students considered him the “best instructor ever”. After retiring from the Navy, he was an employee of H&R Block in Kansas City, a Revenue Agent for the State of Kansas, a simulator flight instructor in Milton, and a volunteer tax preparer for AARP. In 1989, he was able to meet his goal of obtaining his college degree from Troy State University.

He was a member of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod, being Baptized and Confirmed at St. Luke Church in Kansas City, Kansas. He was also an active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church Pensacola (LC-MI).

George loved gardening, Bridge, Pinochle, and entertaining. He was a patron of The Pensacola Little Theatre, Pensacola Opera, and almost any symphony presentation. He was a member of several Mardi Gras Krewes, including Krewe of Lafitte, Karnival Kavaliers, Fiesta Frolickers and president of Avante Garde for three years. He enjoyed tennis, sports, and especially dancing the polka. George had an infectious sense of humor. He was indeed the quintessential person who “never met a stranger”. His personality was very evident when he successfully championed a scholarship program for the Santa Rosa Military Officers Association. A gourmet chef and gracious host, George conducted frequent house parties, which were enjoyed by his many friends in Milton, Pace and Pensacola.

George was preceded in death by his parents, George H. Mikesich, Sr. and Bertha Mikesich; his wife, Sharon Cox Mikesich; brother, John Mikesich; and brother-in-law, Clayton Burklund.

He is survived by his sisters, Kathleen Mikesich Goble and Nancy Mikesich Burklund; sister-in-law, Judy Mikesich; two daughters, Carrie Mikesich (David) Ricksecker of Pace, and Kristie Mikesich (Eric) Fuerstenberg of Virginia Beach, Virginia; and four grandchildren Eric Martinez, Bryan Ricksecker, Samantha Fuerstenberg and Lance Fuerstenberg.

Visitation will be held at 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m., Saturday, November 17, 2018, at Immanuel Lutheran Church (24 West Wright Street, Pensacola 32501), followed by the memorial service at 11:00 a.m., with a reception immediately following the service.

Interment will be held at 1:30 p.m., December 18, 2018, at Barrancas National Cemetery, onboard Pensacola Naval Air Station.

The family sends sincere thanks to Dr. Thomas Sunnenberg and Dr. Dennis Mayeaux for their superb service.

Honorary Pallbearers: Gary Moss, Rick Schultz, Bill Mayo, Tommy Anaston, Dr. James Jowers, Ernie Dixon, Bert Outlaw.

Lewis Funeral Home, Pace, has been entrusted with arrangements.
