Obituary for Edwin Maurice "Ed" Shelly
Edwin Maurice “Ed” Shelly, 92, of Milton, passed away at Covenant Hospice in Pensacola, on Sunday, October 28, 2017.
Ed was born June 7, 1926, in Sallis, Mississippi, to parents, Gus and Annie Belle (Jenkins) Shelly. He graduated from McAdams High School. After high school, he joined the U.S. Navy and served for 21 years. While in the Navy, he traveled the world over as he served ten of those years aboard ship! He was stationed at Whiting Field from June 1952 – April 1953. He left Whiting Field for the Philippines Island for two years. He then reported to Naval Justice School in Newport, Rhode Island. After graduation, he served on the USS Trathen; and then he went to US Naval Communications Training Center on Cory Field and served until his retirement May 1, 1965.
While at Whiting Field, Edwin met the love of his life, Norma Murray; they wed on May 18, 1954. They were married for 63 years and had three sons, James, Guss and Jeffrey.
Ed was a member of the Santa Rosa Lodge #16, Scottish Rite and KCCH. He was a member of the order of Eastern Star, Milton Chapter #189. Ed was a member of Pine Terrace Baptist Church.
He is preceded in death by his father, Gus Shelly; mother, Annie Belle Jenkins Shelly; sister, Martha McCrory; and a brother, Rev. Gus Jenkins Shelly.
Ed is survived by his wife, Norma Shelly; three sons, James Edwin (Barbara) Shelly, Guss Allen Shelly and Jeffrey Wayne Shelly; three granddaughters, Brandi Poarch, Kristen Romanelli and Torrie Madison Shelly; one grandson, Cayden Shelly; one great granddaughter; two great grandsons; two sisters, Tillie Joyce Taylor and Johnnie Miller; and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, October 31, 2018, at Lewis Funeral Home, Milton Chapel (6405 Hwy 90 West, Milton, Florida 32570).
Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, November 1, 2018, at Lewis Funeral Home, Milton Chapel, with Dr. Mike Wiggins officiating. Burial will follow services in Memory Park Cemetery.
