Obituary for Gene Austin Johnson

Gene Austin  Johnson
Gene Austin Johnson, 74 of Pace, Florida, formerly of Marion, South Carolina, and Springfield, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 9th, 2018, surrounded by his family.

Gene was born in Loris, South Carolina, on September 8, 1943, and was a 1963 graduate of Craddock High School. He is the son of the late Ernest Henry and Ruby Gertrude Johnson. Gene served in the United States Air Force and was a veteran of the Vietnam War. He was awarded the Air Force Commendation Medal for Meritorious Service where he played a significant role in contributing to the success of the United States Air Force mission in Southeast Asia. He retired as a Technical Sergeant from the 104th Tactical Fighter Group from the Massachusetts Air National Guard. He was a devoted member of the Socastee Church of God in Socastee, South Carolina. He enjoyed fishing, golfing, riding his motorcycle, playing Candy Crush and watching his favorite sports team the New England Patriots, but most importantly spending his time with his grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents; and his brother, Carl Edmond Johnson.

Gene is survived by his son, Christopher Keith (Yolanda) Johnson of Springfield, Massachusetts; and daughter, Deena Renee (Dwayne) Seegars of Pace, Florida. He also leaves behind his beloved grandchildren, Ryan Christopher Wilson and Tyler Austin Seegars, both of Pace, Florida, and Alexis Johnson of Asheville, North Carolina. Also left to cherish his memory, his loving companion and mother of his children, Susan Shelton of Pace, Florida; his brothers Thomas Earl (Esther) of Iowa, and Clayton Laverne (Peggy) of Virginia; sister, Judy Ann Funicello (Jerry) of Marion, South Carolina; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

There will be a small graveside service at 11:00 a.m., Monday, May 14, 2018, at Eastern Gate Memorial Gardens Cemetery at 1985 West Nine Mile road in Pensacola, Florida.

Lewis Funeral Home, Milton, Florida, has been entrusted with arrangements.
