Obituary for Stephen "Steve" Costa

Stephen "Steve" Costa
Stephen Costa, age 67, passed away Tuesday, February 27, 2018, at his home in Navarre, Florida, after a courageous fight against cancer.

Steve was born on February 16, 1951, in Astoria, New York, to the late Aldo and Rosemary Costa.

He grew up in Queens, New York, and attended Bishop Reilly High School in Fresh Meadows, New York, and the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia, as an engineering major and later a creative writing major. During his early years he worked at Lehigh Carting Co, Inc., for his brother-in-law. After leaving the northeast, he moved to Smyrna, Georgia, where he spent many years working as a bartender. He became known to many as “Subway”. His honesty, kindness and generous personality brought joy to his many patrons. Steve was an avid golfer and bowler who loved playing on leagues at the Azalea Lanes. He was a huge sports fan and loved the NY Giants, Yankees, Atlanta Falcons, and Braves. He always had a fondness for the beach and the ocean. In 2014, he made one of his dreams come true when he moved to Navarre, Florida, only a mile from the beach and another dream realized when he was able to work for the Pensacola Blue Wahoo’s baseball team. He spent many days walking the beach and taking pictures of beautiful sunsets. Steve will be remembered most of all as a loving brother and friend along with his infectious sense of humor and impeccable charm.

Steve is survived by his sisters, Carolyn Boettcher, her husband Bob, and their children, Stephen and Bryan; Rosemary Vecchio, her husband Joe, and their children, Jean Marie, Laura, and Joseph; and his brother, Jim Costa, his wife Michele, and their daughter, Jessica. He also leaves to cherish his memory, lifelong friends, Gene Black, and his son, Miles; close friends, Tina and Robert Donlon, and their children, Tomi, Mikal, Riley and Mikayla, who called him “Papa Steve”; and his many friends who shared a lifetime of memories with Steve.

Arrangements of his service are pending; however, he will be interred with his parents at Mount St. Mary’s Cemetery, 172-00 Booth Memorial Avenue, Flushing, NY 11365.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Children’s Leukemia Foundation, 807 Mantoloking Road, Brick, New Jersey; by phone at 888-253-7109; or online at http://www.clf4kids.org.

Lewis Funeral Home, Navarre, Florida, has been entrusted with arrangements.
