Obituary for Howard Prentiss Shores II

Lt. Col Howard Prentiss Shores II, USMC (Retired), 67, of Pace, passed away Monday, April 6th, 2015 at Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola Florida. Howard was a native of Keyser, West Virginia, one of two sons of the late Howard and Yvonne Shores. He was a graduate of West Virginia University and Ohio State University. He was a 24-year veteran of the United States Marine Corps, teacher, and Financial Advisor. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Pace. He was preceded in death by his father, Howard P. Shores Sr., and his mother, Yvonne Mitchell Shores. He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Jenelle Holder Shores of Pace, his daughters, Shaunda Shores Gubko of Jacksonville, North Carolina, and Elizabeth Ayne Nelson of Crofton, Maryland, and his son, Howard Prentiss Shores III, of Washington, D.C. He is also survived by his granddaughter, Emily Elizabeth Wilson, and three grandsons, Ian Christopher Wilson, David Ryan Nelson, and Michael Allen Nelson, and great grandson, Liam Jacob Carey.

Howard was honorably discharged from the United States Marine Corps after 24 years of service as an infantry officer, which took him from Vietnam through Desert Storm. Following his retirement from the Corps, he worked for Booz-Allen and Hamilton teaching senior officers in the Royal Saudi Navy and General Dynamics teaching the Royal Saudi Army armored reconnaissance tactics. Upon his return to the United States, Howard taught at Holley-Navarre Middle School and the Creative Learning Academy. He then embarked on a career as a Financial Advisor with Guernsey and Associates in Pensacola, Florida.

He was active in his community as a volunteer with Santa Rosa County Emergency Management, former Chairman of the Saint Michael’s Cemetery Foundation, and was an active member of First United Methodist Church of Pace. He was a Rotarian, a Mason, and the current president of the local chapter of the National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors. He taught command and staff courses for the Marine Corps University at Naval Air Station Whiting Field, and the Naval War College at Naval Air Station Pensacola.

Visitation will be at First United Methodist Church of Pace on Sunday April 12th, from 6:00-8:00PM. Service will be held on Monday, April 13th, at the First United Methodist Church of Pace at 10:00AM, officiated by Reverend Brandon Dasinger and Reverend John Webb. Pallbearers will be Howard Prentiss Shores III, Charles Edward Holder, George Gubko Jr., Major Raymond F. Geoffroy (USMC, Ret.), Elwyn Douglas Guernsey, and Bertram Francis Fischer. Internment will be held at Barrancas National Cemetery on board Naval Air Station Pensacola, at 12:30PM.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make a charitable donation in Howard’s name to either the American Heart Association or the United States Marine Corps’ Toys for Tots program.

Howard would not want us to be sad. He lived a full life doing what he loved. He was a faithful servant of our Lord, and shared a wonderful love story with his wife of 41 years, had three loving children, and four adoring grandchildren. Howard was not much for popular music; however, he loved the song ‘Happy” by Pharrell Williams. So, when you hear that song, think of him dancing in heaven.
