Meeting a hero who gave us our FREEDOM

We met Paul W. Bacon April 16, 2014 at The Miriacle League field in Panama City Beach, Fl. What a day he had in store for him! A day of baseball, Americas favorite past-time, with fellow Veterans from Simms Veterans Home in Callaway, Fl.

On buses they came, with escorts from Warrior Watch Riders and local police with their lights on. One by one they got off the bus, as cheers for them filled the American flag lined field, as they entered with smiles and gratutitude for all that were there to thank them for their service.

But oneman especially stood out and that was Paul W. Bacon. His smile was captivating and heartwarming. You instantly knew he was a man of true character. I was blessed to be his "Buddy" and assist him that day around the field in his wheelchair. I asked Mr. Bacon "Who is your favorie baseball player of all time?" He proceded to tell me "Joe Dimaggio". That was all it took; soon the field announced the next hitter, "Paul Dimaggio Bacon";  it was meant to be. On that day he went  2 for 2, both home runs.

We were able to visit Paul several times at Simms after meeting him that day,  and we will never forget him. His stories told of the bravery and sacrifices he gave for our country and of his only son Wayman, who he was so proud of. It is rare that one human being in your life makes you want to be a better person but Paul W. Bacon has done that for us. Rest in peace Sir, we pray we are lucky enough to be in your presence again someday. We love you and will never forget you.
