Obituary for
Shirley Jean Gay
Shirley Jean Baker Gay, 83, of Milton, Florida, passed away, Sunday, October 21, 2018.
She was one of six children born to Claude Thomas and Nettie Mae Burke Baker on November 26, 1934.
Shirley graduated from Church Hill High School, Church Hill, Tennessee. She worked for Eastman Kodak in Kingsport, Tennessee. She later met and married Willis “Dan” Gay in Dayton, Ohio, where they made their home for many years. In 1966 they moved to Milton, Florida, where they remained until their death.
After the birth of her two daughters she dedicated her life to caring for her family and a support for her husband. For many years Shirley was a member of the Milton Garden Club serving in many various positions. She earned her National Council Federation Master Judges Certificate where she judged in many flower shows as well as entering many of her own designs in flowers shows across the region.
She was predeceased by her parents; her husband, Dan; brother, Claude Jr.; grandson, Daniel Wesley; her son-in-law, Bill Walther; and three brothers, Paul, James and David Baker.
Shirley is survived by her daughters, Sandra Walther and Donna (Dr. Pete) Szymoniak; granddaughters, Krista (Richie) Narain, Chelsie (Phil) Driver; grandsons, Kaz (Mitchell) and Matt (Faustine) Szymoniak; great-grandsons, Parker Narain, and Jack and Issac Szymoniak; great-granddaughters, Daisy and Clara Szymoniak; sister, Evelyn Roberts; and many nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank the staff at Sandy Ridge Nursing Facility for the excellent care they provided to their mother for the last three years. A special thank you to Emerald Coast Hospice.
There will be a graveside service at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, October 24, 2018, at Eastern Gate Memorial Gardens, Pensacola, Florida, with Rev. Glyn Lowery officiating. Lewis Funeral Home of Milton has been entrusted with arrangements.
