Obituary for Delores Baxley

Delores Baxley
Delores Amelia Logan Owens Baxley, 87, of Milton, passed away Tuesday, September 25, 2018.

Delores was born December 29, 1930, in Faulke, Mississippi. She lived in Samson, Alabama, from 1938-1957. She graduated from Samson High School; received a certificate from Riley’s School of Accounting; and while employed as an Assistant Cashier she earned a certificate from the National Association of Bank Women. After moving to Milton in 1957, she was employed as Head Bookkeeper at First National Bank of Santa Rosa County for ten years. She retired after 17 years from the Finance and Payroll Department of the Board of County Commissioners of Santa Rosa County.

Delores strongly believed in the Democratic philosophy and was a political activist for many years. She served as President of the local Democratic Women’s Club, Treasurer of the Santa Rosa County Democratic Executive Committee, and as Chair of several offices on the State level including Recording Secretary. She took pride in coordinating the successful effort, with the guidance of the State Representative, to convince the State of Florida Public Service Committee to eliminate long distance telephone charges between Milton and Pensacola.

Through the years Mrs. Baxley was actively involved as President of the Milton Woman’s Club, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of The Milton Woman’s Club and Milton Shakespeare Club; member of Eastern Star, Chapter 189; chairman of “Nite Owl” bowling league; and Chairman of the Santa Rosa County Employees Credit Union. She enjoyed membership in several Bridge Clubs and served as the Director of the Brown Bag Bridge Club. She was active in the First Baptist Church for several years and treasured the association of members of the Community of Christ Church.

Mrs. Baxley was preceded in death by her parents, John B. Logan, Sr., and Ruby M. Smith Logan; husband, James E. Baxley; beloved son, Perry Jackson “P.J.” Owens; brothers, John B. Logan, Jr., Jerry L. Logan; sister, Linda K. Aughtman; and step-mother, Lena Logan.

She is survived by her son, Kenneth Neal “Sonny” Owens; brothers, Henry Gaffney (Donna) Logan and Robert C. (Erin) Logan; beloved grandchildren, Mandi Owens (Marty) Edwards, Tara Owens (Bob) Johnson, Josh Owens (Amy), Ashlie Owens (Johnny ) Nelson, and Julie Owens; six great grand children; several nieces and nephews who she dearly loved; sisters-in-law, Vanarah (Sam) Carroll, Juilette (Zeke) Stokes, Edith (Bernie) Raines, and brother in law Charles Baxley.

Funeral Services will be held at 3:00 p.m., Saturday, September 29, 2018, at Lewis Funeral Home, Milton Chapel (6405 Hwy. 90 West, Milton, FL 32570). Visitation will be held 2:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m., prior to the services.
