Obituary for
Norman B "Norm" Crowder
Norman “Norm” Crowder, 65, of Navarre, FL, passed away Wednesday, August 22, 2018, at Baptist Hospital in Pensacola, Florida.
Norm was born January 6, 1953, to Buford McKinley and Betty Lou Porterfield Crowder, in Ft. Belvoir, Virginia.
Norm grew up in Northern Virginia. He was a 1971 graduate of Garfield High School, Woodbridge, VA.
From a rival high school, Woodbridge High, Norm met Janet “Jan” Sue Griffin, when selling her a pair of back to school shoes at Kinney Shoes in Woodbridge, VA. Kinney’s slogan was, “there’s more to go to Kinney’s for than just a pair of shoes”, and they found that true, as they celebrated their 45th Anniversary on February 10, 2018. Norm and Jan have one son, James Edward “Jimmy-James” Crowder, born November 3, 1976.
Norm retired from the Printing Industry in Landover, MD. Immediately upon retirement, Norm and Jan moved to their newly built home in Navarre, FL.
Norm worked for a few years at Gilmore Insurance and Bonding in Navarre, and in conjunction became active with the Navarre Beach Chamber of Commerce where he served several different positions. When a Director for the Chamber, Norm was in charge of the Music at the Beach Thursday night concerts, and so enjoyed them. He also served as a Director for the Santa Rosa Kids House, the Tourist Development Council, and volunteered as a member of the Navarre Community Emergency Response Team (CERT). For the past few years, in addition to his Board jobs, Norm and Jan were Activity Directors for the wonderful snowbirds at the Santa Rosa RV Resort in Navarre.
He is preceded in death by his father, Burford McKinley Crowder.
Norm is survived by his wife, Jan Crowder; his son, James of Hattiesburg, MS; his mother and step-father, Betty Lou and Bob Norman, of Woodbridge, VA; his father-in-law, Griff Griffin, of Navarre; a brother-in-law, Jim Griffin, and his family in Martinsburg, WV; a sister-in-law, Linda Hense, and her family in Pensacola, FL; a sister-in-law, Annette Deviney, and her family in Virginia and Florida; and nieces and nephews that he dearly loved.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, August 28, 2018, at Lewis Funeral Home in Navarre. Following the service there will be a reception at the Club House of Santa Rosa RV Resort on Highway 98 in Navarre, FL.
The family requests that because of Norm’s strong passion working with the Santa Rosa Kids House, that memorial donations be made in Norm’s name to Santa Rosa Kid’s House, 5643 Stewart Street, Milton, FL 32570.
