Obituary for Randall Hampden Joyner

Randall Hampden Joyner
Randall Hampden Joyner, of Pace, FL, and Birmingham, AL, been blessed with an earthly life of 92 years, good health, mobility, sound mind (with scattered forgetfulness) passed away Friday, August 10, 2018, in Birmingham, AL, following a sudden vascular issue and complications.

He acquired many titles but none he cherished more than that of Granddaddy, which he was called by every generation of offspring. Randall was born in Goldsboro, NC, to Rufus & Leafy Joyner, one of eight children; keeping close ties with each and every one of them. SISTERS: Joyce Watts (Richard) (deceased); Dorothy Cieliesz (Danny) (deceased); Mary Carol Pierce (Earl (deceased). BROTHERS: Howard (Vivian, deceased); Donald (Linda), Kinston, NC; Gene (Vonnie), Cuero, Texas; Charles (Gwen) Oklahoma City, OK.

Randall loved to fly, acquired his pilot’s license and was mesmerized by the solace and beauty of a bird’s eye view. Randall never met a stranger, a true Patriot, serving his country in WWII in Saipan, Japan, US Army 123rd B Company. One of his most humbling experiences was ensuring the remains of fallen heroes were returned home in an honorable and dignified manner. When the war ended Randall was honorably discharged. He joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He strengthened his relationship with Father in Heaven every day thereafter.

While attending college he became smitten with “the most beautiful girl in the world”, Susan Geraldine Faircloth. His charm and smile won her over. They were married November 17, 1950. Together they were blessed with four children in whom they instilled Christian values, compassion for others and the importance of family and service to our Father in Heaven. They were sealed as an eternal family in the Manti Temple in Utah in 1972. Through the demands of his job with HB Owsley, they lived in Goldsboro, NC, Raleigh, NC, Galveston, TX, Wake Forest, NC, Greenville, SC and Durham, NC. After retirement they moved to Pace, FL; and then to Savannah, GA, in 1987 to help his son in his business (Steve’s Custom Electric); returning to Pace, FL, in 1993. Randall’s heart was broken when Geraldine lost her short battle with cancer in 1999, his family and his faith were his anchor in that very difficult time.

Randall had much support from family and friends but was very lonesome. Through his service in the Birmingham Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he met Jennifer Giles Royal, his love and kindness won her over. They married February 14, 2002; and celebrated their 16th anniversary this year. Jennifer has three children, Phillip, LeClaire, and Rhonda.
