Obituary for
Dorothy Caples "Dolly" Taylor
Dorothy Caples Taylor was born on December 14, 1931, in Liverpool, England. At the age of five, she taught herself how to knit to make clothes for her dolls even though her mother didn’t knit.
She was known as “Dolly” to her family. She lived through World War II in Liverpool, attended the Church of England, and became a nurse. After that she studied comptometry, the early days of computers.
When she was 20, she met Cyril Taylor at a friend’s birthday party. He had seen her at the same girl’s birthday three years prior but she had left early to go to her nursing shift at the hospital before he had the chance to talk to her. So, when he saw her the second time, he was determined to talk to her before she left. In October of 1953, Cy left for Toronto, Canada, and on April 10, 1954, she followed him. It was a very rough crossing and she was sick the entire time surviving on an apple and a couple of crackers, so that changed their original plans of going back to England to get married. On July 10, 1954, they wed. Their first son, Howard, was born in November of the following year. A couple of years later they moved to Chicago, but went back up to Toronto to celebrate the birth of their second son, Colin, in May of 1958. A few years later in February of 1964, they had their first daughter, Caron, in Chicago, Illinois. While in Chicago, Dot worked for Pepperidge Farms.
In 1970 they moved to Huntsville, Alabama, and in 1972 the family moved to Columbia, South Carolina. During all of this time she was a dedicated mother and loving wife. She was very smart and talented which showed in her many interests throughout her life. Dorothy became a real estate agent and went back to night school so she could obtain her U.S. high school diploma. She was an administrator at the junior high school; and then she went back to technical school and became a court reporter. Dorothy worked for many years after that in business administration.
She had many interests including sewing, painting, upholstery, wall papering, tiling, and gardening, just to name a few. She was always the happiest when she was with her family.
Vacation time was spent going back to England to be with her parents, siblings and extended family. She enjoyed traveling, camping, going to the beach, shopping, attending concerts, and cooking meals for the family. When working around the house, she would sing her favorite hymns. She was a strong, creative, intelligent mother and wife. She chose to come to Gulf Breeze to live for the past 21 years. The strong family bond brought her other children to Gulf Breeze to be near her.
She joined our Father the morning of Sunday, June 3, 2018.
She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Henrietta Caples; her brother, Thomas; and her sister, Margaret “Peggy”.
She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Cyril Taylor; children, Howard, Colin and Caron; granddaughter, Alyse; brother, James; and two sisters, Sylvia and Beryl.
When asked what she wanted people to remember about her, Dorothy replied that she wanted to be remembered as a good Christian who believed in Christ our Lord and Savior. Throughout her life she shared her faith with her children and taught them the word of God.
A Memorial Service will be held at 6:00 p.m., Friday, June 8, 2018, at Community Life United Methodist Church in Gulf Breeze, Florida. Visitation will be held 5:30 p.m. – 6:00 p.m, prior to the service.
