Obituary for
Thelma Sanders Mayo
Thelma Sanders Mayo, 95, of Milton, died Thursday May 24, 2018. She was born in Holt, Florida, to Dewey D. and Frances R. Johnson Sanders on March 23, 1923. She graduated from Baker High School and married Clifford C. Mayo, of Milton, in August of 1939. Their son, Cliff “Buddy” Mayo, Jr., was born May 21, 1940.
Beginning in the 1950s with a degree in early childhood education from Florida State University, Thelma started “Kiddie Kollege Kindergarten” in her home on Broad Street in Milton. In addition to instruction, she offered bus service, lunches, and a well-equipped playground. The kindergarten became such a fixture in Milton that to this day, a good portion of the town simply calls her “Teacher.”
Thelma was also well-known for the love she showed to her many English Bulldogs over the years.
In August of 1973, her son died suddenly. Suffering profound grief from the loss of her only child, she persevered. However difficult the path, she relied on her faith and soldiered on.
She was a lifelong Baptist and had made Pine Terrace Baptist Church her home for the past 18 years where she continued her calling of teaching children in Sunday School until 2014.
She was preceded in death by her son, Budd;, her husband of 58 years, Cliff; her parents; a dear sister, Jean Crain; her sister, Barbara Hardy; and her brother, Billy Sanders.
She is survived by her two grandsons, Scott and Jim; their spouses, Donna and Douglas; two great grandchildren, Blakely (and Cody) Jones and Nick Mayo; and two beloved great-great grandchildren, Shelton and Emme.
