Obituary for Charles Roy Smith

Charles Roy Smith
Charles Roy Smith, 75, a lifelong resident of the MidSouth/Memphis area, died quietly at his beloved home in Navarre, Florida, on April 17, 2018. Born September 16, 1942, to John Roy Smith and Pauline Smith of Covington, Tennessee, Charles was a graduate of Bears-Hall High School and Memphis State University. He served for 42 years in various managerial positions for Kroger Food Stores in the Southeast region and was a member of Whitehaven United Methodist Church.

Over his life, he served as friend and mentor to many people, quickly seeing potential in them that they themselves did not recognize. For many years, he worked with the Cub Scouts, the Boy Scouts, and served on the boards of Junior Achievement and Wesley Meadows Retirement Home in Hernando, Mississippi. Charles arranged annual golf tournaments allocating the proceeds to Wesley Meadows Retirement Home. An avid golfer, he also served many years on the board of the Bubba Conley Junior Golf tournament which attracted the most talented young golfers of the United States.

He leaves behind his beloved wife of 55 years, Harolyn Smith; their two children, Charles Keith Smith of Nashville, Tennessee, and Cynthia Smith Combs (Rodney) of Rockford, Illinois; three grandchildren, Evan, Abby, and Elise Combs; a sister, Sandra Robinson (Scott) of Covington, Tennessee; and a niece, Christen Hulgan (John) and their children, Jack and Annabelle, of Cordova, Tennessee.

Charles was dearly devoted to his wife, children, and grandchildren and particularly treasured his time with them. He loved the outdoors and was a dedicated gardener and artistic landscaper. Charles also enjoyed his friendships with his circle of golfing buddies and looked forward to their semi-annual golfing trips together. He loved outdoor cooking and entertaining friends.

The family will receive friends on Friday, May 18, 2018, at 4:00 p.m., for a celebration of his life at the home of dear friends Jim and Mary Bullard of Memphis.

Donations may be made to Methodist Senior Services, 109 S. Broadway, P. O. Box 1567, Tupelo, MS 38802-1567. Please be sure to designate your gift for the "Sunday Fund”.

“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” (John 14:27)
