Obituary for Edna Earle McWilliams (Plant)

Edna Earle McWilliams (Plant)
Edna P. McWilliams, 85, of Milton, FL, passed away, Thursday, March 29, 2018. She was born in Andalusia, AL, to the late Rev. Arthur Earl and Sarah J. Plant.

Edna was predeceased by her beloved husband of 46 years, David H. McWilliams, Sr.

She is survived by her brother, Paul Plant and his wife Cherie; her children, David and Valorie McWilliams, Steve and Debbie McWilliams, Jake and Dawn McWilliams, and Angela and Harry Vaughan; and her grandchildren, Brent, Steven, Elise, Ashley, Lindsey, Brett, Nicole and Andrew.

Edna was a Christian with an unwavering faith in God. She prayed daily, studied her Bible, and praised God for her many blessings. She often said her family and friends were her greatest earthly treasures and for this she was thankful.

Edna was a loving wife and mother, a caring friend, and a devoted teacher. She loved to laugh and sing. In addition, she was an amazing seamstress, an unequaled master of baked macaroni and cheese, and a budgeting genius.

Edna graduated valedictorian of her class at Bay County High School, Panama City. She studied at Stetson University and Troy University and earned her Bachelors and Masters degrees at The University of West Florida.

For over 20 years, Edna was a teacher for Santa Rosa County Schools, teaching music at Oakhurst Elementary and Social Studies, English, and Math at Hobbs Middle School. After retirement she was an active member of Santa Rosa County Retired Teachers, serving a term as President.

Edna was an excellent pianist with a lovely soprano voice. During her youth and throughout her high school years and college, she served as a church accompanist and soloist for many of the Southern Baptist churches where her father served as a Minister and in many of her schools’ choirs and ensembles. Before beginning her professional teaching career, she taught piano and lead children’s choirs.

Edna’s hobbies included her interest in reading and history. She was a member of the Shakespeare Club, a docent for the Santa Rosa Historical Society, and a member of the DAR, having personally researched her family lineage.

Edna was a life-long Christian and she loved the Lord. As a longtime dedicated member of First Baptist Church of Milton, she devoted herself to Christian service through playing piano, leading children’s choir, teaching youth Sunday school, and singing in the adult choir. Edna found her true calling in the opportunity to share her study and knowledge of God’s word as a teacher for the ladies of the Martha Sunday School Class.

Visitation will be from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m., on Tuesday, April 3, 2018, at First Baptist Church Milton, FL. Funeral service is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, April 4, 2018, at First Baptist Church Milton, FL, followed by the graveside service at Serenity Gardens in Milton, FL., with Lewis Funeral Home of Milton directing.

Active pallbearers will be Brenton Cooper McWilliams, Steven E. McWilliams, Jonathon Plant, Bill Baker, John Drummond, and Greg Gillis. Honorary pallbearers will be the members of the Martha Sunday School Class and the First Baptist Church Celebration Choir and Orchestra.

Edna’s family is grateful for the love, prayers, and support of her friends, church family, and the care she received from the many staff members of the Forsyth House throughout her extended illness. The family is especially appreciative of our loving Rosie, who cared for Edna in her final years.

Donations may be made in Edna’s memory to the First Baptist Church Music Program or Food Pantry (6797 Caroline Street, Milton, Florida 32570).
