Obituary for
Tom Stewart
Tom Stewart, 71, of Pace, Florida, passed away on Friday, January 26, 2018. He was born in Mobile, Alabama, on December 1, 1946. After graduating from Marengo County High School, he joined the Alabama Army National Guard serving 26 years achieving the rank of Major before retiring. In 1991, he moved to Pace, Florida, where he became actively involved within the community, fundraising for various schools and organizations by cooking his famous Boston Butts and shrimp boils. Tom was a founding member and former President of the Pace Area Chamber of Commerce and instrumental in developing Pace Patriot Boulevard and Pace Library. In 2004, he was elected to the Santa Rosa County Board of Commissioners, District 1, serving from 2004-2008.
He was also an active member and usher at Olive Baptist Church for many years. He was happiest and at his best while doing for others. He was a loving husband, father, brother and friend to many.
Tom was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Merle Stewart; and brother, Gil Stewart.
Tom is survived by his wife of 39 years, Myra Stewart; two sons, Wesley Stewart and Chris Stewart; Eric Peterson, that he loved as his own; brothers, Jimmy (Sandi) Stewart and Paul (Gary) Stewart; sister, Libby Edmonds; brothers and sisters in law; Thomas (Barbara) Noel, David (Cheryl) Channell and Jim (Donna) Cohron; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Visitation will be held 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, January 30, 2018, at Lewis Funeral Home in Pace, Florida.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, January 31, 2018, at Olive Baptist Church with Dr. Ted Traylor officiating.
Pallbearers will be his nephews; Jeff Channell, Troy Cohron, Kenny Gunn, Rich Myung, Jake Stewart and Roy Stewart .
Honorary Pallbearers will be close friends; Buddy Crocker, Bill Eddins, Wendell Hall, Bo Johnson, Brett Lomax, Gordon Porter, Johnny Rogers, Don Salter, Don Sullivan and Don White.
Lewis Funeral Home, Pace Chapel, has been entrusted with arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Ministry Village at Olive Baptist, The American Heart Association or a charity of your choice.
