Obituary for Gloria Odom Scott - Lawless

Gloria Odom Scott - Lawless

Gloria Odom Scott-Lawless died Saturday, October 14, 2017, peacefully at her home.

Gloria was born May 29, 1935, in Atlanta, Georgia, to parents Garnett and Grace (Bailey) Odom. She spent her formative years in Summertown, Georgia, near Swainsboro, and graduated from Swainsboro High School. She attended Tift College, in Forsyth, Georgia, graduating with a degree in English Literature. While there, she formed a close bond with her sweet mates, Caroline Dubberly, Margie Cline and Ann Carol Daniel. That close bond lasted throughout her life, as evidenced by their annual get-togethers and many road trips they made together. The close, sister like bond with Ann Carol was further confirmed when Gloria’s daughter, Gracie, married Ann Carol’s son, Al.

After graduating from Tift, Gloria taught English in Charleston, South Carolina. In 1958, she married William S. “Bill” Scott of Pensacola, Florida. They had three children, Carol Grace “Gracie”, William “Sam” Scott II, and Roger. After living for a short while in Pensacola, they moved to Milton, Florida, where they became established in the local community. Bill was employed by Gulf Power and was active on the City Council. Gloria taught English at Milton High School for many years, she was also a Media Specialist/Librarian at Milton and Gulf Breeze High Schools.

All three of the Scott children graduated from Milton High School and attended the University of Mississippi. Bill Scott was an All-American baseball player at Ole Miss and over the years Gloria and Bill attended many sporting events at Ole Miss. Bill Scott died in 1996.

Gloria remained in their home on Barnes Street and continued teaching at Milton High School. It was there that she met William C. “Bill” Lawless, CDR USN Ret., who was teaching NJROTC. Bill Lawless and Gloria were married in December 2001, and settled into their home in Tanglewood East in Milton. Bill Lawless retired in 2002 and Gloria retired in 2003.

Gloria’s two sons, Roger, and Sam and his wife, Kathy, and their children, William S. “Trey” Scott III, Gracie and Raven, all live in the local area and Gloria reveled in their closeness. Her daughter, Gracie, lives out of the area but she and her mother enjoyed many trips abroad to Europe.

When Gloria married Bill Lawless, she acquired an extended family, all living in Leesburg, Virginia; son, Michael Lawless and his wife, Laura, and their children, Sarah Katherine and Michael James; and son, Craig Lawless and his wife Audrey, and their children, Mason, Virginia and Robert.

The Scott and Lawless families melded beautifully and spent many wonderful vacations together in Tybee Island, Navarre Beach and respective homes.

There are many in the Milton community whom Gloria taught and helped in so many ways. She had an extraordinarily pleasing and calming nature. She was always so positive about everything. Gloria was a most gentle and gracious lady who smiled often and whom everyone was happy to have known. She will be greatly missed by family and friends.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, October 21, 2017, at Lewis Funeral Home, Milton Chapel. Visitation will be held 10:30 a.m. – 11:00 a.m., prior to the service.
