Obituary for Robert Stanley Longsworth

Robert Stanley Longsworth, 70, of Navarre, FL, passed away peacefully in his home on Wednesday, September 20, 2017, surrounded by his wife, children, and grandchildren.

Robert was born in Belize City, Belize, to the late Gilbert and Irma Longsworth. He attended St. John’s Primary School and St. Michael’s College. Robert was a Boy Scout and an Alter Boy for many years at St. John’s Cathedral in Belize City, Belize. He LOVED to play soccer. Even after leaving Belize he played in New York, he formed a team while in the Navy and even coached his two eldest children. Robert’s first job was as a bookbinder at the Belize Printers. He continued his trade when he moved to New York before joining the United States Navy where he served his country for over 23 honorable years as a Machinist Mate, retiring as a Senior Chief Petty Officer. After retirement he worked as an engineer in the Merchant Marines before pursuing and obtaining a degree in the culinary arts. During his time in the Navy, Robert and his family moved many times and his first priority was always to find a church where he and his family could worship. Robert’s final place of worship was at Immanuel Anglican Church in Destin, Florida.

Robert joined the Navy in October of 1973. He did his basic training at Recruit Training Center/NTC Great Lakes, Illinois. During his time in the Navy, Robert served on the following ships: the USS Fort Snelling, the USS Brewton, the USS Saribachi, the USS Peleliu and the USS Acadia(DURING DESERT STORM). From June 1986 to September 1989, Robert was a Company Commander at the Recruit Training Center/NTC San Diego, California. Robert was awarded a Meritorious Service Medal, a Navy Commendation Medal, a Navy Achievement Medal and a Good Conduct Medal with 3 Bronze Stars (in lieu of 4th award) during his over 23 years of service.

He was preceded in death by parents, Gilbert and Irma Longsworth; and two sisters, Jeanette and Rosie.

Robert is survived by his faithful wife of 43 years, Florence Longsworth of Navarre, Florida; son and daughter-in-law, Dwight and Samantha Longsworth, of San Diego, California; daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Shannon Wills, of D’Iberville, Mississippi; son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Jackie Longsworth, Jr., of Merritt Island, Florida; son and daughter-in-law, Aaron and Laura Longsworth, of Escondido, California; and daughter, Kimberlie Longsworth; ten grandchildren, Jordan, Cassidy, Lenora, Christopher, Daniella, Maraya, Alayna, Malachi, Zion and Jesse-Allan; three brothers, George, Frankie and Franz; and two sisters Catherine and Margaret.

Funeral Services with Full Military Honors will be held at 12 Noon, Saturday, September 30, 2017, at the Lewis Funeral Home, Navarre Chapel, with the Reverend Caleb Miller officiating. Visitation will be held 11:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m., prior to the service.

Burial will take place on Monday, October 2, 2017, at Barrancas National Cemetery, aboard Pensacola Naval Air Station, Pensacola, Florida.

Our family wishes to thank the staff of Army Medical Center San Antonio, Sacred Heart Cancer Center, Peoples Home Health and Emerald Coast Hospice, with a special thanks to Ryan Ray, our nurse. We would also like to thank all of our friends and family for all the calls, texts, notes and prayers we received during this most difficult time.
