Katie Lee (Griffith) Sawyer, 94, of Bagdad/ Milton, passed away Wednesday, August 16, 2017.

Katie was born October 8, 1922, in Florala, Alabama, to O.H. and Annie Bell (Meredith) Griffith, and had lived in the Bagdad/Milton area for most of her life. She was a faithful member of Margaret Street Church of Christ.

She married the “love of my life” and “best friend” in 1939, Willie M. Bonifay, Sr., and they had 35 years together before his death in 1974.

Along with her husband and parents, she was also preceded in death by a sister, Allie B. Acosta; and husband, Charles R. Sawyer.

Katie is survived by her daughter, Mary Bonifay Belk Johnson; son, Willie M. “Buddy” (Sara) Bonifay, Jr.; five grandchildren, Steven R. (Vickie) Belk, Sherri Lisa Belk, Sharla J. (Scott) Callaway, Standon Belk, and Toby Lynn Bonifay Odom; ten great-grandchildren, Deborah (Britt) Lancaster, Leah (Jeremiah) Daniel, Joshua Nester, Jason Nester, Justin Nester, Seth (Meranda) Calloway, Taylor Calloway, Alex Calloway, Alex Belk, and Andy Belk; six great-great-grandchildren, Avery Lancaster, Brendon Lancaster, Rylan Daniel, Amrynth Daniel, Hastings Nester, and Calloway Nester; special nephew, Oscar Harold Brown, Sr.; a chosen brother, Joe Yencho; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, August 22, 2017, at Lewis Funeral Home, Milton Chapel, with Grandson Steven Belk officiating, and assisted by Jim Pitts. Burial will follow services in Bagdad Cemetery.

The family will receive friends 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m., prior to the service.

The family requests memorial donations may be made in Mrs. Sawyer’s name, to Covenant Hospice.
